Setting up a discovered attack: sacrifice
We have seen in the previous lessons how to locate a target piece through checks and captures. We will continue this theme in the next three lessons, but with the difference that these forcing moves involve sacrifice. In this lesson we will look at sacrifices with check.
What do you have to do?
Locate a target piece by sacrificing a piece with check. Subsequently gain material by performing a discovered attack or discovered check.
White has a battery ready with the rook and bishop on the second row. The black queen is the target. Now White has to find a second piece to target. By means of a sacrifice with check, the king is lured to a vulnerable square: 1.Rh7+! Black must capture (1...Kxh7), after which white can use the front part of the battery. 2.Bd3+ is now with check (otherwise the queen could capture the rook on f2), so this discovered attack wins a queen.
